ChatGPT – Highlights from Launch to Today

ChatGPT is turning one and we thought - what better than to run through the exciting highlights of its first year?

November 30, 2022: OpenAI's landmark release of ChatGPT, a large language model-based chatbot, marks a significant milestone. ChatGPT rapidly gained popularity, attracting over one million users within five days of its release, a feat that took Twitter two years to achieve.

December 2022: ChatGPT makes history as the fastest-growing consumer internet application, reaching an estimated 100 million users in just a few months. This unprecedented growth signifies ChatGPT's impact on the AI industry and consumer technology.

Early 2023 Developments

January 26, 2023: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released the AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0) to improve transparency and trust in AI development and usage.

February 1, 2023: OpenAI announced ChatGPT Plus, offering premium features to users.

March 1, 2023: Introduction of the ChatGPT API for developers, enabling integration in various applications.

March 14, 2023: Launch of GPT-4, enhancing ChatGPT's capabilities in reliability, creativity, and problem-solving.

March 22, 2023: A letter of AI concern signed by notable tech figures, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott, highlights societal-scale risks from generative AI.

Later 2023 Milestones

October 30, 2023: President Joe Biden signs an executive order on AI safety, security, and trust, establishing new standards and guidelines.

November 2023: ChatGPT celebrates its first anniversary, showcasing a year of significant growth and impact.

Impact on the Industry

- ChatGPT has been a driving force in making generative AI a mainstream concept, significantly influencing enterprise software decisions and sparking large-scale AI experimentation.

- McKinsey predicts that generative AI solutions, like ChatGPT, could contribute up to $4.4 trillion to the global economy annually.

- Ethical, copyright, and security considerations surrounding generative AI have been increasingly debated, with efforts to establish guidelines and mitigate risks.

Future Outlook

A year ago, ChatGPT was the primary choice for consumers and developers seeking large language model (LLM) interaction. Now, the landscape brims with both open and closed source alternatives, including Microsoft Bing, Google Bard, and offerings from startups such as Anthropic Claude, Inflection Pi, and perplexity.ai. There are also multiple options for developers, including APIs from Amazon Web Services, Azure, Cohere, Google Cloud, Hugging Face, OpenAI, and many others.

We look forward to seeing how the landscape of generative AI will evolve in the coming 12 months. As more providers emerge we expect to see competing solutions push each other forward and propel the innovation within generative AI even further.
